1. I finished another book tonight, which makes thirty-three for the year so far. I have moved my initial goal from twenty to thirty and then to forty, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to move it again at this rate, because the year's only halfway through.

2. I spoke with the insurance claim person today and she said that it sounded like since we were both backing up, it would be a 50/50 thing, which would mean our insurance wouldn't go up and we would be liable for half the deductible. So, possibly still have to pay a lot in car repairs, depending on how much it costs to repair the damage, but it could be worse.

3. Look at this fluffy Chloe tum! She just loves the tummy scritches. :)

1. Went out to lunch with my mom today for my birthday (which is actually Monday). We went to California Pizza Kitchen and I got the carne asada pizza, which was delicious.

2. I got in a car accident on the way home, which sucks a whole lot, but it was on the minor side of accidents, so I'm trying to keep positive about that. There's only a little bit of bumper damage to my car and the other car and no one was hurt. (I had just pulled in a parking space and was readjusting my parking, and the other person was pulling out of her space opposite me, and...crunch.) I'm hoping the repairs don't cost too much, are covered by the insurance, and don't make my payments go up too high. *crosses fingers*

Weekly Reading

What are you currently reading?
I have just one chapter (about twenty pages) left to go in The New Jim Crow, so I will probably finish that either tonight or tomorrow. One thing I learned in the most recent chapter, which I had no idea about is that although prisoners cannot vote while imprisoned, the prison populations are used in creating voting districts and such. Most prisons are built in rural areas with very low, mostly white populations. These areas should hold very little power based on population, but because their numbers are padded by thousands of non-voting (mostly black) prisoners, they gain much more weight. Like the extreme gerrymandering in so many areas, this is nothing but an obvious power grab by republicans who know they don't have the numbers to support themselves in a fair vote. >:(

I'm also just a few chapters away from finishing The Library at Mount Char, too. This book is definitely a wild ride and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished up Public Library and Other Stories yesterday, spurred on by the fact that it was due back at the library today. Overall I enjoyed the stories, but found the title and cover blurbs a bit misleading. There was no story called Public Library, and the stories were not so much library-themed as language- and book-themed. They were still good stories, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting.

What do you think you'll read next?
Well, I had pre-ordered the new 7 Seeds and just got an email from Amazon last night that it had been downloaded to my ipad, so I will probably be reading that pretty soon. The last chapter apparently came out this month, but I'm not sure how many more volumes that will be since I don't follow the chapters as they're published, but probably just one or two. Maybe more if she does bonus material like she did for Basara.

1. My library book was due tomorrow and I was afraid I might not finish it in time, but I ended up finishing it this afternoon after work, and then we took a walk to the library this evening and dropped it off. (Bonus Happiness: This branch has a fancy book drop off outside where it actually scans the book as you put it in the slot, so there's no more worries that you drop it off and then it doesn't get properly checked in and you're shown as overdue.)

2. We stopped at Hungry Pocket on the way back from the library and got lamb shawarma for dinner. Haven't been there in ages, but it's as delicious as ever.

3. Look at these two sweeties sleeping together!

“One of the things we are figuring out is have these guys been off the coast and we haven’t seen them? Are they moving inshore for a different reason?” said Sorensen.

YES AND I THINK WE KNOW WHAT THAT IS. Let me know when they reach Washington.

They're known as the "unicorn of the sea", apparently, so should clearly be claimed as a symbolic animal by you (glowing) asexual people out there.

yes I know it's not the same kind of asexual okay

The Guardian: Grenfell Tower families to be rehoused in flats at luxury complex

This doesn't cover all the displaced families. And the flats are part of the "affordable" quota developers are frequently required to build along with the luxury flats, with the usual segregation (not being allowed access to the swimming pool etc. -- in quite a few instances, developers have created buildings where the people in the "affordable" flats have a separate entrance to the building ...), so it's a lot less "luxury" than the headline implies.

And they're being bought by the Corporation of London (as opposed to paid for out of RBKC's £274 million reserves?).

Still, it's a start.

2. Jasper and Molly were actually playing together a little bit tonight! I'm really glad to see them interacting a little more, and would love it that continued.

3. I keep seeing people post about the heat elsewhere in the state and even just elsewhere in LA county, and I'm so glad we aren't getting it. D:

Summary: Sickly Kishida Jun has the ability to see ghosts, but in his opinion, it's a stupid power and nothing good ever comes of it. Considering the number of grisly situations he seems to find himself in after the ghost of his childhood friend Hayakawa Ryoko starts following him around, he may have a point.

1. I had one of those days where I was sleepy all day for some reason and really didn't feel like doing anything, but I did get some translating done, even if it wasn't as much as I'd hoped, and I read a bit, too.

2. We started watching a new (to us) show called Kim's Convenience. Just one season out so far, but apparently it was renewed for a second season, to air later this year. It's a Canadian sitcom about a Korean Canadian family in Toronto (the dad owns a convience store, thus the title). It's pretty cute and I'm liking it a lot so far.

3. I got some sweet cuddle time with Molly last night.

Finsbury Mosque attack.

The attacker was wrestled to the ground by three members of the public; the imam of the mosque protected him (the terrorist who had just attacked his mosque) from the angry crowd until the police got there. That, I believe, is how you religion.

Grenfell dead/missing-presumed-dead now up to 79.

One of the dead is Khadija Saye, a young photographer on the verge of her big breakthrough with her work about to be exhibited as part of a group show at the Venice Biennale.

Here's the series being exhibited: Dwelling: in this space we breathe. Because it's astonishing, and pointing people to her art seems like a way to try to give at least one person a voice and identity as more than just a unit, one of 79.

I repeat my link to the North Kensington Law Centre's Grenfell fundraiser. They're only going to get a tiny fraction of the donations going to the big funds, but any donations are likely to have a disproportionate impact (especially because I'm guessing the large funds can't/won't be used to pay for legal stuff).

RBKC have been officially relieved of responsibility for responding to the disaster because of being so fucking useless.

The chief Breitbart London editor (also former adviser to Nigel Farage) is spreading flat-out lies about Emma Dent-Coad MP in order to try to smear her and Labour as somehow responsible for the fire, despite the fact that all of his statements are provably false.

2. I hired four new cashiers over the past few days, so I'm really hoping at least some of them work out and we can stop being so short-handed.

3. I bought noodles and stuff to make hiyashi chuka for lunch tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it.

4. Grapes have been on sale a lot lately and Carla keeps buying them and they taste good to her, but are too sour for me, but she finally got a batch that I like, so now I have grapes, too. :D

5. I know I just posted a Jasper pic yesterday and I like to alternate kitties, but this one of him sprawled out on the bed was just too cute! He's getting so big!

Brexit negotions start tomorrow even though we don't actually have a government, and those theoretically in charge are still pushing for leaving the customs union, ending freedom of movement, etc..

The Guardian: Big business leaders press Theresa May to rethink hard Brexit

David Davis, the Brexit secretary, says on Sunday that he would head into Monday’s Brexit talks aiming to “secure a deal that works for all parts of the United Kingdom”, but signalled that the plan was still to leave the customs union and reduce immigration.

So, still "contact your MP" time.

Grenfell:

https://secure.thebiggive.org.uk/grenfell is still doubling all donations until match funds run out (and have also started releasing funds in emergency cash via the groups that have established themselves on the frontline, i.e. not via RBKC who are apparently continuing to fail to provide co-ordination, organization, or much of anything)

The Home Office are helping Mohammad Alhajali's family get to the UK, so no more need to sign that petition.

https://grenfellsupport.wordpress.com looks very useful.

North Kensington Law Centre are providing legal education and support to residents affected by the fire: their donations page -- this would be a good thing to donate to as there may be issues with the general funds being used for legal support.

RBKC have £270 million in reserves. As far as I can see, that means they could afford to buy nice property in North Kensington at market prices to rehouse the survivors.

1. It wasn't as hot today as yesterday, and it was actually really foggy tonight. Hoping that trend continues.

2. Jasper is such a chatty kitty. He purrs a lot and he mews when he wants something and he makes that little clicking hunting sound when he's excited about a bird or a bug or a toy, but he also just chirps a lot when he's happy (especially when Carla's holding him and he's settling in for a nap). Here Carla caught him mid chirp.

1. I posted a new chapter of Yasha, which means there are just five chapters left to go in the series. O_o This seemed like such a huge, overwhelming task when I started on it, and now it's almost done!

2. We had a lot of people call out today, so I was expecting it to be pretty hectic, but it was actually less hectic than I'd feared. (Still definitely on the hectic side. Stop being sick, people!)

3. Tried this strawberry chocolage gelato for dessert tonight and it was so good!

4. Speaking of good food, when we cleaned out the fridge the other day, I found that we had a ton of yakisoba noodles, so I made some for dinner tonight. I can't remember the last time I had yakisoba, and I always forget in between how much I actually like it. It's one of those ones that comes with three packages of noodles in one bag, and I made all three, so now we have lots of leftovers, too.

5. Carla spotted some sweet kitties in the bedroom today! (What Molly is sitting on is the cat carrier topped with a discarded blanket from when the weather was colder; it really should be washed and put away for summer, but since the cats are using it, we'll probably just end up leaving it out forever, lol.)
